If someone’s first question about your nonmonogamous status involves concern for your primary relationship, try to remember that they’re being tactless, not malicious. Although the instinct may be to go on the defensive, this only plays into the idea of “protesting too much.” Instead, try discussing ow opening your relationship has created growth and greater fulfillment for both of you. After all, that’s the healthy reason you did it.
