X Monogamy vs Polyamory - Monogamy involves loving only one person. Polyamory involves loving more than one person. These are sort of like sexual orientations, except based on love rather than bumping uglies. Y Open vs Closed - Contrary to popular belief, these do not mean the same thing as the above. Monogamy can be open, and polyamory can be closed. A triad may be closed, with those three people in a sexual and emotional, committed relationship. A monogamous relationship may be sexually open but not emotionally. A polyamorous group could be fluid-bonded and sexually closed, but emotionally open to form supportive relationships with others, sans sex.
