If you google NRE, you’ll find a swathe of definitions from the nearly clinical to the almost fairytale. While NRE refers to the emotional “high” that comes with a new partner, it is really rooted in habituation. Habituation is, in laypeople’s terms, the psychological process of getting used to something. We are used to a long term partner’s quirks, mannerisms, favorite stories and foods, activities and activity levels, and other defining characteristics. A new partner is a new set of qualities to explore and become comfortable with. NRE can make someone seem like the most interesting and important thing in the world, so we have to be careful not to set our existing relationships on autopilot when starting something new.
